How To Treat Sunburned Skin

Posted by Sam Gomez on

We all know how painful sunburns can be. It’s no fun for anyone to see your skin turn red and feel itchy. Plus, you might feel more concerned about how to treat the sunburn and how long it will last. The good news is that there are a variety of ways to treat sunburned skin, including natural ingredients and proper care. Lucky for you, amig@ we’ve gathered up some ways you can treat sunburnt skin to make yourself feel better as quickly as possible.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS?

It’s finally that time of year when we all flock to the beach and go on vacation to sunny destinations. It’s important to be prepared for the intense UV rays that come along with these trips. Using sunscreen keeps UV rays from reaching the skin. It also blocks some of the visible light that causes redness, swelling, and pain. Even those who are extremely vigilant about avoiding sun damage can make the mistake of not putting enough sunscreen on when in new environments. It happens to the best of us! In these cases where we forget to take proper care of our skin is when we might develop a sunburn. Here are some signs that it may be time to head inside and out of the sun:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Blisters(sometimes)
  • Pain
  • Heat (when you touch the burned area)

It's important to treat the burn as soon as possible, because the longer you wait, the more damage can be done to your skin. If you experience any of these symptoms, it's time to take action!

HYDRATION IS KEY!

In order to treat sunburned skin, you need to hydrate it. To do this, you need to use a moisturizer on your skin and drink PLENTY of water. Sunburns can often cause you to feel dehydrated. By drinking water, you can start to feel more hydrated.

If you’re looking for the perfect moisturizer to use after sun exposure we’ve got you covered!  Our Moisturizing Botanical Bars are uniquely formulated with plant butters, oils, and Mexican botanicals to bring deep hydration to the skin. Replacing the need for large bottles of lotion, our small but mighty bar comes in a gorgeous reusable/recyclable tin for safe storage. Hydrated skin and Eco-friendly products for the win!! Good for: Very dry skin. Whole Body. The Original Moisturizing Botanical Bar has a subtle scent of tangerine oil. It contains Tepezcohuite also known as “skin tree” in Mexico for its ability to regenerate skin cells. The Flor De Mayo Moisturizing Botanical Bar has a luxurious Jasmine scent and contains pink clay which reduces irritation and inflammation. The Jasmine Oil has Antibacterial properties and a natural cicatrisant which helps reduce scars. Truly the perfect duo! Both bars contain Nopal Oil (prickly pear oil) which deeply hydrates and is rich in Vitamin E (antioxidant), K, and omega fatty acids that keep your skin healthy. The amazing benefits don’t end here! Nopal Oil is rich in amino acids that promote skin cell turnover.

Remember to keep the Botanical Bars in a cool, dry place. Do not leave in the sun (we suggest leaving at home and OUT of your beach bag).

Instead of using harsh chemicals for your skin use all-natural products. All of our products are cruelty-free, palm oil free, vegan, and have no synthetic fragrances (We only use pure essential oils). Remember hydration is key to helping your skin heal faster.

USE COLD WATER

Showering with cold water is a great way to treat sunburned skin. Avoid using extremely hot water because it can cause more pain and irritation. Cold water can help reduce inflammation and pain and provides relief from the discomfort that comes with the sunburn.

When taking a shower it’s essential to use a soap that offers deep hydration. Our signature Cactus Soaps are handmade with skin-nourishing plant butters and oils. The “penca” or cactus pad in our soaps assists with soothing and cleansing the skin. Which is exactly what your skin needs!

Noche Clara Cactus Soap: Good for oily / acne-prone skin. Charcoal provides the gentlest exfoliation. The subtle scent of sage and eucalyptus oil invigorates the senses while providing a calming effect.

Planta Futura Cactus Soap: Good for all skin types. The subtle scent of lemongrass oil to bring clarity of mind. Lemongrass Oil has Anti-inflammatory properties that reduce redness and inflammation.

Flor De Mayo Cactus Soap: Good for sensitive and dry skin. Pink clay creates a creamy lather. Allow the subtle scent of Jasmine oil to anoint your body.  Jasmine Oil has Antibacterial properties and natural cicatrisant (scar reducer).

Desnuda Cactus Soap: Good For Extra Sensitive Skin. All Skin Types, Whole Body, & Face. Completely unscented. It is perfect for those who have extra sensitive skin and noses. It contains nopal, a humectant that draws moisture to the skin.

Keep soap well drained between uses for long life.

Natural soap bars are best because they're free of harsh chemicals usually found in conventional bar soaps. All of our soaps are very delicate as they aren’t perfume soaps. This means no scent will be left on your skin after using.

BE GENTLE

When you are burnt, you must be very gentle with your skin and pay close attention to it so it doesn't get infected and heal properly. Sunburns can cause your skin to peel so remember to not scratch or pick the skin. Be extra careful!

Once your skin is in the peeling stage and the redness and irritation is gone you can focus on gently removing the dead skin. We recommend using a gentle exfoliant to scrub away dead skin while also treating the burned skin.

Our Cactus Flower Exfoliants are the perfect three-in-one oil cleansers, exfoliants, and moisturizers that leave your skin silky smooth and glowing. You will not need to apply a moisturizer afterwards. Cactus helps to cleanse and draw moisture to the skin.

Hibiscus: Hibiscus flower is rich in antioxidants, Vitamin C, and AHA's that promote healthy glowing skin. Naturally scented with a blend of jasmine and grapefruit oils.

Mandarina: Nopal cleanses and hydrates the skin while safflower oil infused with achiote seeds soothes. The subtle scent of tangerine oil helps to awaken the spirit.

Lastly, remember to always wear sunscreen when going outside during times when UV rays are strongest especially during these summer months! Not only are these tips used for treating sunburnt skin but can be used all year round. Our gorgeous Nopal based products help soothe, cleanse, and hydrate the skin. They’re the perfect addition to your self-care routine. Keep your skin protected all year round, amig@!
