As far as natural ingredients go, aloe vera is certainly one of the most popular. Over the past few decades, it has earned a reputation as an effective sunburn remedy and as a super hydrator. However, there’s another green plant that comes to mind and gives aloe a run for its money, and that’s the nopal cactus.
Also known as prickly pear, nopal cactus has been used for millennia for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant-rich properties. It works wonders on its own and when mixed with other skincare ingredients, which is partly why Nopalera’s founder, Sandra Velasquez, launched an entire brand surrounding it.
She grew up in California near the Mexican border and remembers being surrounded by nopal cacti. Then, when she first started working on Nopalera in 2019 and was learning to make soap, a DIY recipe called for aloe vera, which she did not have. However, she had nopales on hand and so decided to use them as a substitute in the formula—and a light bulb went off. “Here, is this ancient and culturally symbolic plant that’s packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. I couldn’t believe nobody had created a skincare brand with it and believed the world should know about its benefits,” shares Velasquez. And with that, Nopalera was born.
Below, learn more about the nopal cactus, how it benefits the skin, and how it differs from aloe vera.
What is Nopal Cactus?
Also known as prickly pear cactus, the nopal is a type of cactus that’s native to the Americas and is primarily found and used in Mexico. While it thrives in warm climates and temperatures, it can grow in any climate. Visually, nopal cacti stand out for their rounded tips with blossoming pink fruits (known as tuna) sprouting from the top.
What is Aloe Vera?
Everybody and their grandparents know the aloe vera plant for its inner gel—that’s made up of 99.5% water—is renowned for soothing (regular) burns and sunburns. Unlike the nopal cactus, this type of succulent only grows in warm climates and is native to the Arabian peninsula and several African countries, such as Madagascar. Aloe vera plants are similar to the nopal in color only, as its leaves are long and pointy as opposed to the nopal’s round finish.

What are the Benefits of Topical Nopal Cactus?
First things first: there are two parts of the nopal cactus that are used in beauty products. There’s the pad and the tuna, and we use both at Nopalera. The nopal cactus benefits the skin and hair with its hyper-hydrating properties. But its benefits go way beyond keeping the skin at healthy moisture levels.
In skincare, it also brightens a dull complexion, stimulates collagen production, and promotes skin cell turnover. This is due to the nopal cactus’s high concentration of antiinflammatory and anti-aging omegas 6 and 9; healing vitamin E, softening and moisturizing essential fatty acids; reparative amino acids; and brightening vitamin K. At Nopalera, we believe that skin deserves the premium treatment from head-to-toe, which is why we feature it in all our Body Moisturizers, Body Cleansers, and Body Exfoliants.
In haircare, the nopal cactus is used to repair damage, boost shine, and even increase volume. Furthermore, it’s widely believed that it also encourages hair growth and reduces hair loss, but more research is needed to prove the claims. What we do know is that nopal stimulates blood circulation to the scalp when applied topically, which in turn helps promote healthy hair growth. Plus, it also helps regulate oily scalps thanks to its antimicrobial properties which keep sebum under control.
What are the Benefits of Topical Aloe Vera?
As mentioned beforehand, aloe vera is widely used to soothe burning sensations and is popular for calming itchiness. It’s rich in vitamins A, C, D, and E; amino acids, and minerals such as magnesium and zinc. With so many rich properties, one could assume that there’s a lot of scientific evidence of aloe’s benefits, but that’s not the case. There isn’t enough medical evidence to support most of aloe’s skin care claims, but it is widely accepted that it’s a good hydrator and soother.
What Are the Differences Between Nopal Cactus and Aloe Vera in Beauty Products?
“Aloe vera, like nopal cactus, has a lot of data showing that it helps with wound repair,” notes clean cosmetic chemist, Krupa Koestline. However, she adds that the mechanisms of both ingredients are actually quite different. “Most of the benefits of aloe vera are associated with its polysaccharide composition—the hydrating effects are more of a humectant effect, which draws moisture to the skin, as opposed to nopal cactus oils which are rich in fatty acids.”
As such, she highlights that aloe vera is a great ingredient for lightweight products, but that the nopal cactus can be used in both lightweight serums and gels to add moisturizing effects as well as richer, more nourishing formulations.
What Are the Sustainability Differences Between Nopal Cactus and Aloe Vera?
In terms of sustainability, Velasquez highlights how quickly the nopal cactus can regenerate itself. “When you cut off a [nopal] pad, a new one grows back in three weeks—aloe doesn’t do that,” she says, nodding to its sustainability benefits and how reliable it is as an ingredient. As such, the same plants can be used over and over again and can withstand any climate, whereas aloe takes longer and needs a warm climate to grow.
And as if that weren’t enough, since nopal cactus thrives in all types of weather it’s completely drought-proof. (Hey, there’s a reason the United Nations called it the crop of the future!) The aloe vera plant can also withstand long periods without water, but not nearly as long as nopal can.
This is important for the health of the planet, but it’s also important when considering food scarcity issues. The nopal cactus can be consumed as food (both in its raw form and cooked) whereas the aloe vera plant can only be consumed in juice form.
Beyond that, the nopal cactus can also help tackle sustainability issues in the fashion industry, as its outer layer is used as a high quality leather alternative. (Most vegan leathers use plastic, which isn’t eco- or animal-friendly.) Unfortunately, the outer layer of the aloe vera cannot be used as a textile material.

What are the Nutritional Differences Between Nopal Cactus and Aloe Vera?
Both the nopal and aloe are known to be rich in antioxidants, but studies have shown that nopal has greater antioxidant potency than aloe does. Furthermore, the nopal cactus up to 50 percent more amino acids than the aloe; has higher percentage of vitamins C, B2, B3, B5, B6, and B9; is richer in minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, and sodium; and has certain vitamins that aloe doesn’t, such as vitamin K and A. Furthermore, nopal has been used in Mexican traditional medicine as an alternative treatment for type 2 diabetes. Further research is needed, but a small study did find that those who ate nopal cactus had reduced glucose spikes in comparison to those who didn’t.
The nopal cactus is as rich and resilient as the Mexican culture Nopalera was born from. We’re proud to share its many benefits with the world—one product at a time.

What comes to your mind when you think of the word “fragrance”?
Likely, images and memories of your favorite perfumes come to mind. This is to be expected as most of the time people talk about fragrance they’re referencing perfume, but fragrance is present in a wide variety of products. We’re talking creams, exfoliants, cleansers, etc.
What’s more, the term “fragrance” is often listed as an ingredient itself rather than breaking down everything that goes inside it. We know, for example, that alcohol and essential oils are typically used, but they’re rarely listed separately on an ingredient list.
In fact, more than dozens of ingredients can go into one fragrance fixture, but companies aren’t legally obligated to disclose what goes in them thanks to the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA) which was designed to help brands safeguard their trade secrets. However, it also gives companies a get-out-of-jail-card that allows them to withhold what ingredients they put in their formulas.
“In addition to the lack of transparency, traditional fragrance formulations tend to contain high amounts of allergens, fixatives like phthalates that are endocrine disruptors, and other ingredients like lilial, aldehydes that are known to cause health issues,” says clean cosmetic chemist and Credo clean beauty council member, Krupa Koestline.
It’s in response to this that the clean beauty and clean fragrance movement is having such a big moment right now. In fact, a recent study showed that over 68% of consumers are looking for beauty products described as clean.
This uptick in interest surrounding clean fragrances is something that Nopalera’s founder, Sandra Velasquez, has taken note of and is catering to—all Nopalera follow the Credo Clean Standard. Whereas the US government only bans 30 ingredients, Credo bans 2,700, which is why Velasquez adheres to their standards. “The word ‘clean’ gets thrown around a lot, and while US laws are getting stricter it’s still the Wild West out here,” she says, noting that the future will be a much more transparent one. “We want to be future-forward.”
Below, we outline everything you need to know to make the most informed decisions when shopping and so you feel confident and safe every time you use Nopalera..
What is Clean Fragrance?
As of today, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has not provided a regulated definition for the term “clean” which means that any brand can define it as they see fit. This is why Nopalera adheres to the strictest and most thorough standard in the US market. So, before we get into what a clean fragrance is, let’s explain what a clean fragrance is not.
Clean fragrance does not use phthalate esters (there are five traditionally used in fragrance: DMP, DEP, DBP, BBP, and DEHP), aldehydes, mineral oil, formaldehyde-releasing agents, etc. The most common red flag ingredient found in fragrance is diethyl phthalate (DEP)—a 2018 government study found that exposure to DEP affects the male reproductive system, male infant development, and how hormones act in the body, yet many brands still use it as a fixative to make scents last longer.
So, unlike traditional fragrance formulas that include some of those sketchy ingredients, clean fragrance is completely free of them. While each formula differs, they’re often also categorized as organic, natural, naturally-derived, synthetic, and/or sustainable. Apart from being environmentally conscious, a big reason clean fragrance is so important is for all the health benefits.
And when effective, clean alternatives are readily available, picking a clean fragrance is a no-brainer. In the case of phthalates, for example, Koestline says they can be replaced by clean ingredients such as dipropylene glycol and isopropyl myristate.
Long gone are the days when people had to sacrifice quality for safety.
Why Is Clean Fragrance Important?
People often say that toxicity is in the dose, but when “fragrance” is used as a blanket term, companies don't disclose how much of certain ingredients are in their formulas, it’s impossible for people to make informed decisions about what they use. Considering how often we use skincare, the bioaccumulation of sketchy ingredients on our skin can grow and grow over time. Koestline says that phthalates and aldehydes are associated with organ toxicity, endocrine disruption, allergies, and contact dermatitis. This means that in the most extreme cases, continued use of traditional fragrances could interfere with reproduction, disrupt fetal development, cause skin irritation, and even disrupt the nervous system.
On the other hand, we understand the amount of fear mongering that exists in the beauty industry. While using a traditional fragrance may lead to certain side effects, it doesn’t always. But with that said, if the possibility exists, why risk it?
What’s the Best Way to Find Out if a Fragrance is Clean?
Since every brand is free to use the term “clean” as they see fit, the easiest way to figure out whether or not a fragrance formula is truly clean is by checking whether it falls under a retailer’s standards. We’ve mentioned Credo’s several times as it’s the most thorough, but other retailers such as The Detox Market, Sephora, and Ulta have their own set standards that make it easy to pick out the cleanest formulas from their selection.
Alternatively, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has its own Skin Deep database which allows users to input the name of any product and check its ingredient list and overall EWG score.
However, if you’re out shopping and hopping in and out stores, the best indicator of a clean formula is ingredient transparency. Brands that put in the effort to adhere to clean formulas also want their customers to feel safe when shopping for their products, so they’re more likely to be open with what goes into them.
Where Does Nopalera List Fragrance Ingredients?
Every Nopalera product proudly shares its complete ingredient list and has been vetted by Credo.
To discover what goes into each product, first open its full product page, scroll down to where it reads “key ingredients.” There, click on the “see all ingredients” button for a complete list of ingredients. Each fragrant ingredient will stand on its own, and you can learn more about each by clicking on it. Each pop-out will outline in detail what the ingredient is and its purpose.
At Nopalera, we want to encourage you to own a bolder body experience, and one of the best ways we can do that is by ensuring you’re using the safest ingredients.

]]>It’s that time of year when las flores begin to bloom, la lluvia has its own mind, y el sol comes in and out as it pleases – spring.
At this point, you’ve probably experienced at least one or more of the following:
Whichever emoción la primavera brings you, one thing we can most likely agree on is that Mother Nature has control – to a point.
What does this mean?
It means that we, la gente, also have control over Mother Nature in giving us an average amount of lluvia y sol year after year.
How?
By treating her right, of course!
But are we really treating her right?
Are we doing our part in taking care of her? How does investing in our planet benefit all of us?
All important questions, but let’s not go into information overload. Instead, let’s go to the beginning with what started it all—Earth Day or Día de la Tierra.
Many of us hear or see the word “Earth Day” thrown around in April, but may not exactly know what it means or why it’s emphasized en Abril.
Well, for starters, Earth Day is an annual event that began in 1970 en Los Estados Unidos.1 Back in the day, mucha gente didn’t consider the detrimental effects of products they used in their everyday lives. The biggest one being ozone pollution from los autos y las fabricas industriales. The tipping point for change was when the oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, pushed la comunidad to take action.
Politicians and activists talked to los estudiantes en los colegios about the importance of taking care of the planet. To get the most participation, the day chosen to speak at the colleges was April 22nd.
Why? Because it was right between Spring Break and finals.
They knew those students had to be there.
So what did those students do?
They protested to protect the environment.
Colleges, universities, and groups of all backgrounds rallied across the country for a change in legislation. It was more than a protest, it was a movement.
Fighting for the protection of the environment was a movement because everything had to be done from scratch. This meant that they first needed to immerse themselves in learning everything about the environment. Imagine taking a crash course in the sciences knowing your time was ticking!
On a social level, these activists had to think about their audience. How they went about organizing activities had to be coordinated to meet everyday Americans and powerful politicians. The tone was key to inclusivity.
It’s with this energy and this spirit that we move forward at Nopalera to preserve the Earth. Just like these protests, we created our path through strength and resilience.
After all the positive change these acts brought upon the United States, it had a ripple effect on the rest of the world. By 1990 Earth Day went global and by 1992 the United Nations Earth Summit took place in en el país de los Brasilieros– specifically, Rio de Janeiro.
So how does this global impact help us learn more about Earth Day?
Let’s take a look south of los Estados Unidos—América Latina.
Dust off those geography books, take out a globe or get on Google Earth for this mini geography lesson by Nopalera.
No te preocupes, this visual gives a better understanding of where everything is as we dive into Earth Day in Latin America.
Type in “Latin America on a map” on Google and you’ll see that it includes México in North America, Caribbean countries like Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, and a few Central and South American countries.
So we have the location of these beautiful países, but what defines these countries as Latin American?
In the simplest terms, Latin American countries are those where the dominant language es Español. The language came to the Americas by the Spanish, and the majority of the countries still speak Spanish to this day.
These Latin American countries unite with a common language, but what makes each país unique is how Earth Day celebrations take on different roles in different countries.
What comes to your mind when you think of the word, “celebrate?”
Maybe piensas en piñatas, pastel, y música. You probably think of laughter and smiles too.
While the word may give most of us feelings of happiness and excitement, not all countries have similar feelings when it comes to the celebration of Earth Day.
Here are a few countries in América Latina where you can see celebrations take shape in different forms.
En México y Argentina, Earth Day celebrations take place with a mixture of dances and protests. Celebrations are significant in these countries because they highlight the history of the Aztec connection to la tierra. They also show justice for campaigners of the environment who’ve lost their lives in protection of it.
In México, el nopal holds significance because of its role in Aztec history.
As the Aztecs searched for a new place to call home, their god told them they'd find their home when they saw a cactus growing from a rock. The Aztecs traveled until they stopped in the Valley of México. In that valley, there was a lake with a small island in the middle. The island had one cactus on it and on that cactus stood an eagle with a snake in its mouth. The Aztecs took this as a sign from the gods and decided to make the valley their hogar. This valley is known as Tenochtitlan, which means an area where el nopal grows from stone.
So how does this historic legend tie in with Earth Day?
Knowing that a cactus needs little water to survive, this plant is naturally resilient and sustainable. Its resilience shows why it's an iconic symbol seen on the Mexican flag.
Subconsciously, the Aztecs helped pave the way to environmental awareness. Being eco-conscious has only continued to grow over the years.
Because environmental awareness has increased since 1990, many Méxicanos are willing to invest more in the products they buy. Por ejemplo, in 2019 48% of Méxicanos paid more for products that were environmentally friendly, like natural cosmetics. A great product, for those looking for an eco-conscious choice, is the Moisturizing Botanical Bar from Nopalera.
Why?
The moisturizing botanical bar allows you to avoid purchasing lotion in plastic bottles. Say goodbye to all those empty bottles lying around the house and welcome in deeply hydrating jabón! Did we mention that this soap also comes in a reusable and recyclable tin?
Yes, the environment is an important reason to be more conscious about what people buy, but on top of that, natural products are healthier.
How?
They don't have chemicals that are toxic en tu cuerpo. Instead, you'll find natural ingredients like plant butters, oils, water, and prickly pear cactus.
Help the environment and your body be healthier, not just on Earth Day, but everyday.
In the Caribbean, Earth Day gears more towards the protection of the ecosystem since so many tourists visit these countries each year. Taking care of the ecosystem in countries like Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico is not only for the preservation of la naturaleza, but for the livelihood of los Cubanos, Dominicanos, y Puertorriqueños. If the ecosystem begins to deteriorate, tourists don’t visit and many people lose their jobs.
So in the spirit of Earth Day now and every day, think about como podemos apoyar la gente del caribe.
Here are a few ideas to help you get started when you take your next vacation to these beautiful countries:
So on your next trip, keep your skin hydrated and glowing with the idea of easy to travel with, natural Nopalera products, and sustainability in mind.
And finally, the mesmerizing countries of Central and South America, and parts of del caribe.
While estos países may have specific celebrations, one important thing that unites most of these countries is the Escazú Agreement.
The Esaczú Agreement came to surface on March 4, 2018 in Costa Rica. It highlights the right for everyone to live in an environment that is healthy and sustainable. The Agreement reached full force by April 22, 2021. Currently, 12 countries have ratified it.
What does it mean to be healthy and sustainable?
One way is to be conscious of the products and companies you’re buying from.
It’s easy to go online and become distracted by the graphics and fun words that make you want to click “Buy Now.” But, we challenge you to dig deeper into your shopping experience so that you know your job as the consumer is being played ethically.
When you buy from Nopalera, you’ll immediately see how the company was built, by who, and what ingredients we choose to use in our collection.
In addition to sustainable products from companies, here are a few specific actions some of these countries have taken to make sure they’re setting up a better future for la gente alive today and those born in the future.
Maybe you already do some of the things you see below. If not, empieza ahora!
Día de la Tierra has come a long way, but as you may know, we still have more work to do to make sure Earth is here to stay for generations to come.
One way you can start is by purchasing natural products.
At Nopalera, we’re committed to providing you with high-quality products that work, as well as the items you’re already using. What comes to your mind when you think of a cactus?
Maybe you picture a green plant with thorns, sitting under the hot sun in the open desert —I can feel the heat just thinking about it!
You might also visualize a small succulent on your balcony that hardly needs any water –cheers for keeping a plant alive!
Or, tal vez, you may think about tu abuela cutting nopales into pieces for that delicious cactus salad –is your mouth watering yet?
However the cactus comes to your mind, it all comes down to one common word —
Sustainability.
In other words, the cactus is an important plant because it helps us y nuestro ambiente, without hurting the needs of la gente in the future.
Let’s get the whole picture of how the cactus is one of the most sustainable plants in the world by starting with how and where it appears on our planet.
This may or may not be a surprise to you, but cactus plants don’t only grow in hot, dry areas.
Yes, you'll see them in México and some states like Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Texas.1 But you can also find them en las montañas, rain forests, and colder places like Alaska and close to Antarctica! 2
There are about 2,000 different types of cacti found around the world and they all start life in a similar way.
Refresh that life biology section of your mind with the highlights of how these amazing plants are created:
Some cactus plants have male and female parts that help them reproduce. The male part of a cactus plant is the one that carries the pollen. Because the bright colors of the pollen are easy to see, it attracts animals like birds and insects.
As the animals eat the pollen, they move it from one part of the plant to the female part. That’s when fruit begins to grow and the seeds from the fruit are created. The seeds are either eaten by other animals or moved by the wind. Depending on where the seeds fall and if the conditions are right, new cacti grow and the cycle starts again.
Cactus can also grow without seeds and flowers. How? Certain cactus plants, like the prickly pear and cholla, have weak stems. Because these types of cactus are not as strong as others, the stems fall. It’s when the stems are separated from the main cactus and on the ground that it can take root and form a new one.
So how does the life cycle of a cactus tie in with sustainability?
As the world continues to get warmer, many plants are challenged with survival because of how much water they need.
A hotter world and menos lluvia is not a good mix for our crops. Except for one.
The prickly pear cactus.
Opuntia ficus-indica is the scientific name for this cactus. Why is it so special you may ask? The cactus pear plant is considered a bioenergy crop. This means that it can create energy made from its natural plant.
Replacing fossil fuels con un nopal? Amazing.
But how does this work?
Well, once the cactus is stripped from its fruit and pads, all that’s left is the outer layer of the cactus –it’s biomass.
What makes biomass important is that it stores chemical energy from the sun. La energía can be turned into heat, liquid, or gas. 3
Another reason the biomass of the cactus changes the game in sustainability is because it can turn a natural environment into an area that collects carbon dioxide. 4
Piénsalo, if you see a dry area that hardly gets any rain and think, “nothing can come from that,” think again through the lens of cactus benefits.
El nopal absorbs the carbon dioxide in the area and stores it.
Now that you’re thinking through the lens of cactus benefits, it may be easier to visualize dry areas with cactus pear plants. The area may not be the best fit for other crops, but it is for el nopal.
More areas covered with cacti means more opportunities for the creation of bioenergy.
The cactus plant benefits don't stop there…
This special cactus plant uses a fraction of water and can stand more heat than other crops.
Here are some of the few ways the prickly pear cactus helps us out:
But that’s not all.
Let’s take a look into how scientists are working hard to make sure que estemos bien.
Remember the word “genes” in science class? If not, no worries.
Genes carry information from parents to offspring. This information holds different characteristics, which is what makes every cactus unique. 6
Los científicos study how to manipulate the genes from the cactus to help other plants that aren’t as water-efficient as others.
Por ejemplo, during the day, the cactus shuts its openings to save water. This helps the water from evaporating due to the high temperature in most places where cactuses are found. En la noche, the grooves open.
Seeing how these intelligent plants work, scientists want to use the genes from the cactus fruit and place them with the genes of other plants so that they have the capacity to survive in seasons of drought.
More crops surviving in drought means more food for us to eat during droughts.
We’ve talked about cactus plants in the wild, but how do they benefit you en tu casa? Besides how aesthetically pleasing they look around the house, of course.
Let’s start with a common feeling most of us experience in our day-to-day lives…stress and anxiety.
Whatever negative energía the day may bring upon you, coming home to peace sounds like a great way to end the day, don't you think?
Maybe that means taking a nice, warm bath or a hot, steamy shower with your favorite cactus soaps! Your skin will thank you for nourishing it with plant butters and oils that don’t dry out your skin.
Por ejemplo, the Planta Futura Cactus Soap is a great choice to help calm la mente. Its subtle scent of lemongrass eases away the day's troubles and allows you to be at your best for the next day.
Need something with more exfoliation? Try out the Noche Clara Cactus Soap. That little scent of eucalyptus and sage oil is all you need to clear your mind and begin again.
But how do these amazing nopales create this feeling of peace?
The cactus plant shrinks the level of carbon oxide. In other words, carbon oxide is one of the number one reasons for feeling anxious and restless. By having a cactus plant in your home, you’re creating an environment of calmness. 7
Another reason why you may enjoy a cactus plant in a corner of your sala, or on top of your coffee table, is because it cleans the air inside your home.
Why not improve the air quality of your home with these beautiful plants? Purifying the air looks like the cactus taking in carbon dioxide and turning it into oxygen. You can breathe knowing that the cactus is helping get rid of those nasty toxins.
Fun fact, did you know that you can minimize CO2 in half with just one large cactus for every two people inside your home? Time to go cactus shopping!
But the benefits don’t stop there.
Along with peace and cleanliness, el nopal also helps with reducing noise.
The background noise of cars passing by, the dishwasher humming, or la tele playing a novela you’ve already watched for the 100th time, can all be subtle distractions in the tasks you need to finish.
Instead of losing your concentration and halting your day of productivity, your cactus minimizes that noise by 3-5 sound levels, or decibels.
And finally, how about that dry skin? You know, the white, flaky sections of your knuckles, elbows, or knees. A tragedy.
Thankfully, with a cactus plant in your home, it can help with giving tu casa just the right amount of humidity.
How? Through the magic of transpiration.
Basically, transpiration is when water from the soil is taken to the stem and then to the outer layer of the cactus. From there, the water evaporates through its pores and into the air. 8
Say goodbye to dry skin and any itches you may have!
Being mindful of what you bring into your space, put in your body, or place on your skin can make the world of a difference in your path to sustainability.
Whether you’re a pro in this area or just starting, add the Nopalera familia to your sustainability journey.

Spring is a time of renewal and transition, as we move from the cold and dry winter season to the warm and sunny days of summer. During this time, our skin may require special attention to adjust to the changing weather and avoid potential skin concerns. In this blog, we'll explore some helpful tips and products to help you achieve healthy and radiant skin this spring season.
For many people, springtime means allergy season, which can cause skin inflammation, runny nose, and rashes. To combat these symptoms, it's important to use skincare products that are fresh, light, and contain anti-inflammatory properties. Nopalera's Original Moisturizing Botanical Bar is an excellent choice as it includes Tepezcohuite extract known for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties. This extract helps to soothe sensitive and irritated skin, making it perfect for those with allergies or other skin sensitivities.
As we transition into spring, it's essential to use products that contain nourishing benefits for our skin. Nopalera's Moisturizing Botanical Bars are great options for this as they contain Nopal oil, derived from the fruit of the Nopal cactus. This oil is packed with Vitamins E and K, antioxidants, and antibacterial properties, which help nourish and moisturize the skin without clogging pores.
The changing seasons and life stresses can take a toll on our skin, making it essential to establish a therapeutic skincare ritual. Taking the time to pamper yourself with a skincare routine can have both physical and mental health benefits. Nopalera's body care bundles provide a great way to start incorporating the essentials into a therapeutic skincare ritual. These bundles include a Citrus Bath Set and a Pink Flower Bath Set, which come with a Nopalera Cactus Soap, Moisturizing Botanical Bar, and Exfoliant. Alternatively, you can create your own bundle by choosing three or more products and saving 10% on your purchase.
To prioritize your self-care routine, it's essential to make time and space for it in your daily life. Whether that means creating a relaxing atmosphere by using aromatherapy, such as diluted lavender or rose essential oils, or burning relaxing candles, it's essential to make the effort to do something for yourself. Nopalera's basic bundle essentials include the Sauvecito Duo which contains a Noche Clara Cactus soap, formulated with eucalyptus for its antibacterial and cleansing properties, and sage, which is often used as incense in spiritual rituals to remove negative energy. The Florecito Duo celebrates the calming properties of jasmine and includes Nopalera's Flor de Mayo Cactus Soap and Moisturizing Botanical Bar. These duos are perfect for quick, yet effective self-care moments.
As the weather warms up, it's crucial to prepare your skin for the summer season by renewing and exfoliating the skin. Nopalera's Mandarina Cactus Flower Exfoliant is an excellent choice as it gently exfoliates the skin while moisturizing and nourishing it at the same time. Formulated with Annatto seeds, derived from a tropical fruit, this exfoliant has been used for centuries by ancient civilizations to heal the aftereffects of sunburns. We suggest using it 2-3 times a week to rid your skin of dead and dry skin and leave it soft and smooth.
The transition from winter to spring can be a challenging time for our skin so it is important to use products that hydrate, nourish, and leave you with a glow on the inside and outside.

The Nopal Cactus is a nostalgic, and significant variety of cacti that is primarily grown in the southwestern part of the United States and throughout Mexico. They can grow up to 15 feet in length and have been revered for their high nutritional properties, edible leaves and fruit, cultural symbolism, and versatility in bath and body products and consumer goods.
There are over 100 varieties of Nopales native to Mexico, most of them being edible. The name Nopal comes from the Nahuatl Indigenous Uto-Aztecan language, presently spoken by over 1.5 million native speakers across Central America. The word means nopalli, and identifies the cacti by their round padded shape leaves.
Given its high medicinal value, nourishing properties, and versatile nature, Nopalera uses different parts of the Nopal to enhance the specific purpose of each product. Nopales have antibacterial properties, antiviral properties, and the ability to heal severe wounds and damage caused by the after-effects of sun exposure, reducing the appearance of scars.
Nopalera’s Cactus Soaps and Cactus Flower Exfoliants, contain the part of the Nopal called la penca, known as the cactus pad. This feature is versatile in its ability to cleanse, hydrate, and delicately exfoliate to renew, and soothe the skin. Nopalera's Original Moisturizing Botanical Bar and Nopalera’s Flor de Mayo Moisturizing Botanical Bar, contain Nopal oil. Coming from the cactus fruit, it’s rich in antioxidants, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and vitamins including Vitamin E and K, bringing the needed nourishment your skin deserves.
2. Saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea)
Saguaro is a famous cactus often depicted in old western movies, a grainy, and yellow-tinted scene, all that can be seen is a green narrow cactus, with its hands held up high. The Saguaro cactus is a symbol of abundance, in a setting that can convince us of the opposite. The Saguaro cactus is known to live up to 200 years, it has been a staple in the local indigenous cuisine of the Southwestern region of the United States, including the Southeastern Yavapai, the Tohono O’odham, and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa. The name Saguaro is derived from the Indigenous Ópata language, meaning “arms.” It’s since been civilianized into Spanish, spelling it Saguaro.
Its fruit is rich in Vitamin C, B12, and antioxidants, strengthening the immune system. For centuries, it has been used to treat Rheumatism, a condition that causes pain and inflammation in between joints and muscles. The Saguaro fruit is also rich in H2O and sweet in flavor, making it perfect to have on a hot summer’s day.
3. Night Blooming Cactus (Selenicereus grandiflorus) & Queen of the Night (Epiphyllum oxypetalum)
Derived from the Ancient Greek language referring to the mystical moon goddess, Selene. It's native to Central America, the northern part of South America, and the Caribbean. Previously thought to have grown the largest flowers out of all species of cacti, it is recognized for blooming as a large white flower. This mystic cactus has been revered for its medicinal properties, especially as a heart remedy including aiding symptoms of depression and lethargy. For centuries it has been used as a restorative tonic and regulator of blood pressure, it can also aid in managing congestive heart failure, and angina. This condition causes restrictive blood flow to the chest, followed by a tightening sensation.
While it's often referred to as the Queen of the Night, it’s not to be confused with the Dutchman’s pipe cactus (Epiphyllum oxypetalum). It also produces a large white flower that blooms only once a year during the evening, called the Queen of the Night. Used in traditional East Asian medicine, it is known to treat urinary tract infections and reduce inflammation and pain, as well as respiratory conditions.
4. Cholla (Cylindropuntia)
Known to be a jumping, and poisonous cactus, Cholla, meaning “head” in Spanish, is native to the Americas and found growing throughout the continent with a concentration in the southwestern part of the United States and Mexico. The name, “Jumping Cholla” is due to the fact that if slightly provoked by any touching or external force, this cactus will launch its needles at the moving subject. While coming close to the cholla can be intimidating, and slightly dangerous, its buds are a popular snack choice similar to the taste of artichoke or asparagus. It's incredibly rich in calcium and pectin, a soluble fiber often found in various fruits and vegetables.
This cactus snack has been found to eliminate colon cancer cells, improve cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, as well as aid in gastrointestinal issues. You can eat the Cholla buds straight after picking them from the cactus. It has small spines, but they are soft to the touch. Traditionally, they are boiled with salt and recommended to be sautéed in olive oil, added to salads, pasta dishes, or even pickled.
Cactuses are extremely versatile plants. From medicine to home decor, traditional and delicious meals, to consumer goods like alternative leather products, and even beauty and wellness products. It's a native plant that is distinct from the Americas and is grown throughout the Mediterranean, Africa, and Oceania. Used for their endless ways of giving, Cacti are known for their iconic image, history, and culture that is here to stay.

]]>1. Plan Out Some Alone Time
In our busy lives, especially in American work culture, taking the time for yourself throughout the day is often-times– not even considered or taken into factor. In contrast to Latin American culture, Siesta, a midday break or ritual, is considered normal, and essential for mental, emotional, and physical health. Since most of our schedules don’t permit us to take a Siesta, planning at least 30 minutes in the morning or before going to bed to meditate, pray, listen to music, read or stretch will significantly improve any anxiety, stress, or brain fog will guarantee a slow, and grounding start to your day.
2. Create a Daily Ritual
Setting aside short intervals of time just for yourself are baby steps to fully embracing a rich self-care routine without feeling guilty or selfish. A few examples of self-care rituals you can start incorporating is taking control of your Circadian Rhythm. The Circadian Rhythm is your body’s hormonal response to light. Taking the extra step of turning your devices to night mode or lowering the brightness to completely avoid any artificial light 1-2 hours before going to bed can significantly improve stress levels, and give you much better sleep. Waking up with the sun, and going to bed with a soft warm light is often ideal for an optimal circadian rhythm, but since that might be difficult for many of us due to busy work schedules, taking the extra mile to imitate this would be worthwhile.
Our sense of smell is strongly tied to our memories and our emotions. Spraying or rubbing an aromatic herb on yourself or over your bed before going to sleep, can promote relaxation, and associate the time to relax as a positive one, rather than a negative one where many often feel unproductive for taking the time for themselves. Using an herb like rosemary is known to use for protection, warding off negative energy, and when burnt, used to disinfect bacteria in the air. Or Lavender to promote sleepiness and relaxation. Meditation and prayer are great ways to come back to center, reflect, analyze your emotions, and ground yourself. Accompanied by sage or incense of frankincense or myrrh, bring a positive association to concentrated experience, which is known to rid of negative energy.
3. Care for your Skin
Little by little get to know what works for your skin, and what doesn't. Before applying any product it's always best to do a patch test on your arm to watch out for any allergic reaction. The four basics of skincare are to cleanse, moisturize, nourish, and protect. While Nopalera's products gently multi-task within the basics of skincare, it's great to know how to differentiate and how to get started.
Cleansing is often the most tricky part. Finding a cleanser that doesn't dry out your skin, and one that effectively cleans and gets rid of any pollution or bacteria can be difficult. Keep in mind that it's also how you use the product. A foaming cleanser can be outstanding for the evening before getting into bed, but too drying in the morning. Customizing your skincare routine and choosing a brand that focuses on high-quality ingredients is essential. Nopalera's Cactus Soaps are gently formulated and balanced to meet the skin's needs. Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Coconut oil, and Castor oil moisturize the skin, while Rice Bran Oil is known to dissolve excess sebum and get rid of clogged pores. And lastly, prickly pear cactus (nopal) nourishes and aids in both the cleansing and moisturizing process.
Exfoliation being part of the cleansing process offers a more in-depth wash by lifting up dead skin cells, therefore renewing, nourishing, and moisturizing the skin. While the general advice for exfoliating is to do it once or twice a week, Nopalera’s Cactus Flower Exfoliant in Hibiscus, and in Mandarina are gentle enough to use every day.
Following up with a moisturizer is essential to aid the skin's aging process throughout the years, and to add a protective layer to the skin. Shea butter, Cocoa butter, Jojoba oil, and many others naturally contain SPF, which is often enhanced with the addition of sunscreen to your skincare routine. Nopalera’s Moisturizing Botanical Bars are eco-conscious by intentionally avoiding plastic packaging and coming in a reusable or recyclable tin. Being purely formulated with rich and lush butters, and indigenous oils like Tepezcohuite extract, a specimen native to central and South America, Tepezcohuite has been revered to reverse skin aging and skin irritation. Nopalera’s Botanical Bars last longer and save water when compared to other lotion products that are usually 70% water.
4. Writing
Expressive writing has been known to be therapeutic in aiding your emotional and mental health. It helps us understand where we are coming from, our feelings, our fears, goals, passions, and what can help us go after these things. After going through a difficult situation, writing is also a way of letting go, coming to terms, and moving on to the next chapter of our lives. Even when we are stressed or going through a lot in our lives, writing can free our minds, and allows us to clearly see where we’re at. Writing allows us to explore our creative side, whether that’s through creative writing in developing stories or novels to writing letters to friends or family. There is something so special when holding a letter, that takes longer to write, resources to take, and moments to think that bring us to the present when everything around us often seems to be going one hundred miles per hour.
We hope you take the time to care for yourself FIRST this Valentine's day, amig@.

Think about it. A nopal is not born tall, strong and beautiful. That takes courage. That takes nourishment from our Earth and our ancestors. Just like it takes us courage to grow through life. The growth is always inside of you - it only takes believing in it and believing in yourself. Every step you take with intention you will leave a seed planted for your own growth.
Another year is about to be gone. But let’s not only say goodbye, let us also say thank you to ourselves for walking head high in a path we have created for ourselves. Reflect on the lessons learned and on the lessons you have yet to learn. Envision what’s next but don’t stress about what’s next.
We are all born in different lands surrounded by different cultures and customs. We move and shift with the Earth and time but one thing that never changes is the power to write our own story. We should never be moved by anything or anyone - only ourselves. You’re not here to be shoved into a category “no somos niche”.
Before we can be comfortable writing our story we have to be courageous enough to own our journey. If you can’t own the journey you’re standing in, then there’s not a world in which you can help yourself write a story you’ve only ever dreamt of. It’s so easy to compare our journeys with others around us. Why do I have to work harder to be seen by them? Why is it that they grew up with a circle of professionals around them? Why do I have to step out of the house and take four buses to get to school or work? Why do I have to work twice as hard for what they only work a minimum? Why am I at home taking care of my siblings while they are out meeting new people, seeing the world? There are so many other questions you might have asked yourself growing up. Many of these might’ve even made you feel ashamed or different for a moment. They might have pushed you to sink in with the rest and not stand out. Eventually this could have led to a life of either not seeing what you wanted or wanting what they had.
One thing they didn’t tell you is that courage is contagious. The moment you step out of their view and step into your own sight you will find all the wonderful things that you are. You are a chingona and you are a jefa. You’re jefa of your own life. The moment you step into your worth is the moment that you will attract happiness, light, and success. And people will follow.
Whatever beautiful city or country you are from - own that. Whatever music got you through middle school and high school - own that. Whatever experience you lived to get you to where you are now - own that. The lipstick shade that gives you confidence when you walk out the door - own that. The platillo that your grandma made every weekend - own that. Own the tacos, own the nopal, own the hoops that carry power in them, own the vaporub milagroso, own your neighborhood, own your style and own the hand-me-downs, own everything that made you into the person you see right now. The moment you choose to hide even the tiniest part about you is the moment you lose sight of the future that is made for you.
The truth is that the life and things you want are not as far as you think. Call it manifesting or call it hoping. You are the catalyst that will make it happen. Your mind, your courage, your discipline, and the love and respect you have for yourself - that’s the catalyst and the water your seeds need in order to grow.
After learning the value of owning your journey there is future dreaming to be done. Take a breath of confidence and close your eyes and imagine where your future self is. What is your future self doing? How does the future you feel… are they calm, happy, excited, satisfied, eager? Forget how you got there for now. Just allow yourself to imagine and simply let it happen.
Nada bueno en la vida es forzado.
As opposed to others’ opinions, building your future isn’t heavy lifting all the way up. In fact don’t even imagine a hill, just envision an infinite land with a few hills and rabbit holes. It’s only difficult if you make it difficult. And when you reach those hills that simply can’t be avoided, that's when you will need to bring in your strength and believe in your journey more than ever. Nothing will ever be strong enough to halt your journey. Everything you want is already yours. Find the peace in yourself to let it flow and take action when it feels right.
That’s the best part of your story! The parts you don’t limit. The moments where you decide there are no limits to writing your story. If you’ve ever seen the ocean you’ve come across the quiet ripples and looked past them into the setting sun. Every reflection of light on that water is a part of your story. The ripples seem infinite so why shouldn’t your dreams be infinite too? Let your journey bring you peace like the ocean brings peace to the horizon.
The infinite ocean serves as a blanket to the setting sun. This will show you that just like the sun on your end of the world, you also need time to be wrapped up, cared for, and recharged. Don’t try to build a future by making it a task you’re not allowed to take breaks from. It’s a gorgeous thing to see a clear or a blurred vision of the life you want but it’s an unhealthy thing to work non-stop without giving yourself grace. Take the moments in life that you deserve to feel gratitude and pride in yourself and the loved ones who have supported you along the way. When you’re ready to keep dreaming, take the time to find a peaceful place to set goals.
If thinking too much ahead overwhelms you then don’t worry about long-term goals. Start with short-term goals. You don’t need to decide now, despite what others say. A short-term goal could be an activity that brings you peace and therefore gets you one step closer to the life you envision. It’s the moments when you choose to feel peace and have a clear canvas that will bring you the most creative thoughts. Sometimes these uninterrupted thoughts are the ones that will turn into your long-term goals. As soon as you feel an urge to do something, no matter how big, you write that down. Find a journal, an agenda, or even a post-it note. Keep your goals safe and clean from the stresses and doubts that life will throw at you. Don’t try to find the right time, that time never comes because it never really leaves. Every time is the right time.
Remember, a happy mind and heart mean a clear and motivated mind. Break it up into small pieces. Make time to get to all of those pieces. Every piece is a goal. And every goal accomplished is a moment of gratitude and celebration.
Never stop celebrating yourself.
Take a night for yourself in the bath with the mood-lifting aromas of the jasmine flower in the Flor de Mayo Cactus Soap. Grab a post-it note after your spa and write down a new goal (short or long-term) and stick it on your vanity. The next morning wake up fresh and clear-headed after a face wash with the Mandarina Cactus Flower Exfoliant. You’ll see your new goal looking back at you in the mirror after you’ve rinsed your face of the brightening oils. You can either plan for a time in the day to work towards your goal or you can go about your day and let the moment come to you. We’re not all wired the same, we all move in different ways and become motivated in different ways. Just remember to make the time and never stop owning the journey. Take the life you envision. It’s yours.

Like Mexico’s people, nopales are incredibly resilient. With the ability to grow abundantly on coastlines to 4,700 meters above sea level. Nopales only require water and regular brushing to prevent the spread of cochineal plagues. Cochineal is a parasite that lives on cactuses, if not maintained properly mold may begin to develop which can dry out the nopal cactus. Cochineal is a friend and a foe, as it's also used as a natural red dye for traditional wool goods.
Nopales have a slimy composition once cut into, similar to aloe vera. This substance contains properties that kill harmful bacteria, heal wounds, reduce damage caused by sun exposure, and can aid in diminishing the appearance of scars.
Given the purpose of each product, Nopalera uses different parts of the Nopal cactus to benefit, nourish, and maintain the skin. Nopalera’s Original Moisturizing Botanical Bar and Nopalera’s Flor de Mayo Moisturizing Botanical Bar, contain Nopal oil. Derived from the cactus fruit, it’s rich in antioxidants, antibacterial properties as well as Vitamin E and K. It's also been shown to be a magnificent carrier oil successfully delivering high amounts of nutrients into the skin.
In Nopalera’s Cactus Soaps and Cactus Flower Exfoliants, contain the cactus pad, also known as la penca, which is used to delicately exfoliate and renew the skin.
With this, nopales are also rich in fiber, anti-inflammatory antioxidants, and Vitamin C. As well as a variety of minerals, such as magnesium, potassium, and calcium. Nopales have antiviral properties, and the ability to regulate blood sugar levels. Nopales are made up of 95% water. Making them incredibly hydrating. With research, we can identify the abundance of electrolytes present in the Nopales cactus water, which has been revered to cure hangovers prior to drinking alcohol. While everyone may not be keen on eating nopales’ slimy composition, traditional recipes bring the diced nopales to a boil to reduce their slimy texture. Then it can be poured onto a salad to enjoy or seasoned and sautéed and added into a taco.
A traditional and nostalgic nopal recipe that is quick yet versatile to make is un Ensalada de Nopal.
For this recipe you will need:
Nopales
White onions
Red tomatoes
Cilantro or parsley
Fresh firm cheese
Olive oil
Wine vinegar
Pepper and salt
Rinse and remove the thorns from the nopales, cut them into squares, and add them into a pot with a handful of cilantro and half an onion quarterly chopped. There is no need to add water because as soon as you start to heat up the mixture, the Nopal begins to release its own water. After fifteen minutes, remove the mixture from the heat, and let it cool down. Then chop the other half of the white onion into rings, along with diced red tomatoes, a handful of fresh parsley, and diced cheese. Then you can add in your cooked nopales. For the salad dressing mix in some olive oil, wine vinegar, pepper, and a pinch of salt all according to your taste. And mix well! You can enjoy this as a side dish with a meal or you can add it to a taco with carne asada y con una salsita. Y se queda delicioso.
Another cozy and nostalgic nopal dish is Sopa de Nopal. A traditional meal often prepared during Semana Santa, as part of the Holy Week Lent diet that avoids dishes containing meat. The thorns on the nopales and the role of removing them have significant symbolism in the remembrance of the resurrection during the Easter Holiday.
For this recipe you will need:
2 pounds or a kilo of nopales
3 tomatoes
4 garlic cloves
1/4 onion
4 avocado leaves
1 tablespoon of cumin
Salt to taste
100 gr or 11/2 ounces of shrimp
3 small spoonfuls of corn oil
6 cups of water
3 green chiles (optional)
Again, pour your diced nopales into a pot, with a pinch of salt. On low heat, allow the nopales to release their own water to get rid of their slimy composition. Add corn oil to another pot with 4 crushed garlic cloves along with your chopped onions and satué. Go ahead and have a teaspoon of cumin along with your chopped tomatoes, and continue satuéing. Although optional, here you can add your green chiles in whole or diced. At this stage add your cooked and diced nopales along with the avocado leaves. Add your dried shrimp, satué a bit, and add your water, and let cook for a few minutes, and enjoy!
While avocado leaves are less known in Western cuisine, they have been stable in Mexican cuisine for centuries. Avocado leaves are incredibly nutrient-dense and rich in magnesium, calcium, zinc, and potassium. They are a great addition to add to a meal or in a snack with nopales.
Another recipe that keeps a bit of the Nopales’ slimy composition comes after harvesting and removing the thorns from the cactus pad. Add a bit of oil to a grill or saucepan, placing them on low to medium heat for a few minutes on each side, with a bit of homemade salsa, and caramelized onions with corn or wheat tortilla. This is an easy, versatile snack to have.
Nopales have a significant economic presence in Mexico. In the Central de Abasto en Mercado Jamaica y La Merced, roughly 350,000 nopales are produced every year. Around 80% of the produced nopales are sold from this market, and the other 20% are given towards indirect exportation abroad to the United States, Japan, Spain, and Germany.
For generations, nopales have been known to be Mexico's life-giving plant. Thriving in what could be a hostel, and barren land without them, relying on minimal water and maintenance and providing an abundance of nutrients in a single pad or fruit. It comes as no surprise that despite its humble origins, it has been essential in building an empire, becoming a national identity and a nostalgic essence that has lingered throughout Mexico's history, culture, and cuisine.

]]>AGUA, AGUA AGUA!
It’s important to drink plenty of water for your health and skin. When you’re dehydrated, your skin will look dull, dry, and tired. Drinking enough water helps your body flush out toxins, keeps you hydrated, and gives you soft, supple skin. Life can get hectic but always take the time to stop and grab a glass of water. Make sure to bring a reusable water bottle everywhere with you so you can nourish your body with water throughout the day.
Establish a skincare routine.
Dry air, cold weather, and central heating can dry out your skin. When it comes to establishing winter skincare, it's all about hydration! A great skincare routine will help prevent dry and flaky skin on your face or body as well as keep your skin moisturized and supple throughout the coldest months of winter. When selecting products for your winter skincare routine opt for all-natural nopal-based skincare products (also called prickly pear). The key here is to find what works for you and stick with it as much as possible.
Gentle Cleanse
Cleansing the skin is an important part of any skincare routine. We recommend using a gentle soap for cleansing your skin as it won’t strip away moisture or leave behind any residue. It’s important to use a gentle, clean-ingredient soap that is suitable for your skin type. Soaps with natural ingredients are best, as they will not dry out your skin. Here’s a guide for our signature cactus soaps if you’re having trouble deciding which to choose:
Noche Clara (black soap): Good for oily / acne-prone skin.
Planta Futura (green soap): Good for all skin types.
Flor De Mayo (pink soap): Good for sensitive and dry skin.
Desnuda(white soap): Extra Sensitive Skin.
Our signature cactus soaps are ideal for all skin types and can be used on the whole body and face. They’re handmade with plant butters and oils that cleanse and leave your skin moisturized instead of drying out your skin. Here at Nopalera, we want to nurture and care for your skin. We do not use synthetic fragrances in our soaps. Perfect for those with sensitive skin and noses! Each of our cactus soaps offers a uniquely subtle scent.
Noche Clara (black soap): Subtle scent of eucalyptus and sage oil brings clarity of mind.
Planta Futura (green soap): Subtle scent of lemongrass oil to calm the mind and plan for tomorrow.
Flor De Mayo (pink soap): Subtle scent of jasmine oil.
Desnuda (white soap): Completely unscented. It is perfect for those who have extra sensitive skin and noses.
Don’t forget to keep your soap well-drained and away from running water. We recommend storing it in a soap dish, draining rack, or soap bag to get the most out of your products!
Exfoliation is key.
Exfoliating will help you get the most out of your winter skincare routine. Dead skin build-up can lead to dull skin and exfoliating removes dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. Exfoliating regularly will help your skin to regenerate itself giving you brighter and healthier skin which is exactly what our skin needs during these colder months.
Our Cactus Flower Exfoliants provide gentle exfoliation which makes it perfect for daily use. Also, great for use on the face and body. It’s a three-in-one oil cleanser, exfoliant, and moisturizer that leaves your skin feeling silky and soft. We offer two Cactus Flower Exfoliants, Mandarina and Hibiscus.
Cactus Flower Exfoliant, Mandarina
Cactus Flower Exfoliant, Hibiscus
Our Cactus Flower Exfoliants are great for exfoliating under beards and doubling as a moisturizer to prevent dry flaky skin. The benefits of exfoliating are amazing so if you haven’t already make sure to add a gentle exfoliant to your skincare routine!
Moisturize your skin!
If you have dry skin, it's essential to moisturize properly. Our Moisturizing Botanical bars are uniquely formulated with plant butters, oils, and Mexican botanicals to bring deep hydration to the skin. They are great alternatives to lotions and creams, as they're eco-friendly and easy to use! It comes in a gorgeous reusable/recyclable tin for safe storage. The tins can be reused to store a variety of items such as jewelry, candy, earbuds, and hair ties. Plus, they can be used for your whole body: hands, dry legs, arms, feet, and even lips! It’s multipurposed and extremely versatile.
Both bars feature Nopal Oil (prickly pear oil), which is high in Vitamin E, K, and omega fatty acids, that keep your skin healthy. The Original Moisturizing Botanical Bar has the subtle scent of tangerine oil and contains Tepezcohuite which is known as the "skin tree" in Mexico for its ability to regenerate skin cells. The Flor de Mayo Moisturizing Botanical Bar has the subtle scent of Jasmine oil and pink clay which reduces irritation and inflammation.
‘Tis the season of dry skin so don't forget to keep moisturizing and drinking plenty of water!
]]>Cocktails, costumes, and cartoons. Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is peak “mainstream” culture, even if some people aren’t clear on the meaning of the holiday. It’s all good – we’re here to share and learn from each other, and the more we all reflect on the connection between this world and what comes next, the more we can focus collectively on what matters most: nuestros queridos, our loved ones – past, present, and future.
Even though I founded Nopalera with the mission of celebrating and elevating Latin@ culture through our amazing cactus-based botanicals, I’ve never claimed to speak for all Latin@s, all Mexican Americans, or even all Californians. Like any other holiday, Día de los Muertos has elements that vary from country to country, city to city, and family to family. We each have our own way of celebrating, but what’s shared is the intention: to remember those who have passed in order to keep them alive, and to stay connected to them across the invisible border between life and death.
So what does this holiday mean to me? Honoring the past… and looking to the future.
Growing up in San Diego in a Mexican American household, I assumed that everyone everywhere set up ofrendas to honor their dead at the beginning of November. In my family's case, over the years we celebrated grandparents, great grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and even beloved musicians who’d provided the soundtrack to our lives. We added photos, sweets, water, mezcal, flowers, candles, and papel picado. We sat with our dead, either literally at their graves or by our at-home altars. We told stories about them and laughed at things we’d never heard or things we’d heard a thousand times before. More than anything, we gave them – and ourselves – the one thing we could never get back: time together.
By setting aside time to remember those who have left us, we reconnect to all the joy, grief, love, and lessons they have to offer, no matter how long ago they passed. We reach across the generations because we understand that everyone and everything in this world is connected. We open our hearts and ears to listen to the wisdom that has been passed down over centuries.
How else would we have gotten where we are today?
How else would we know the secrets of the nopal? Who taught us that we could eat it, make textiles from it, and use it to hydrate our skin and hair?
Los que vinieron antes. The ancestors. They have so much to share with us.
As a working mom and entrepreneur, I’ve had to follow a harder road than a lot of so-called “bootstrapped” companies. I started Nopalera from scratch (at the beginning of a pandemic) with no money, no investors, and no network. All I had was an idea, and a passion for creating a bath and body brand that put Latin@ products where they belong: on luxury shelves.
But I also had the voices of my ancestors.
Let’s get real: no one – AND I MEAN NO ONE – is 100% self-made. I come from a long line of strong, Mexican and Mexican American women and men whose spirits have guided me, even when I didn’t realize it. They are that flash of inspiration, that creative spark, that invisible support that says, “Sigue, mija.” Keep going.
So even though I built Nopalera without the financial and commercial resources of other companies, I was able to draw upon the resilience of generations of folks who paved the way. They survived against all odds. They thrived in spite of the harshest conditions. They were resilient, like the nopal itself. And they kept moving forward, having faith in a future that they knew they’d never see.
They are the ones that made all of this possible. If I am self-made, it is because everyone before me provided a foundation. Even though they are muertos, they are part of my community.
At Nopalera, we talk a lot about community – not just our community of loyal customers (you!), but also the community we create at work. From the start, I knew I wanted to establish a workplace that valued each team member, and one that people were excited to be a part of. I wanted to provide a space for ambitious people – especially women and especially Latin@s – to feel seen and heard and supported in their own dreams and aspirations. The team today is a reflection of that idea. Yes, I’m building a business, but together we are building a legacy. We are expanding definitions of who we are, and who we’re “allowed” to be.
That spirit of expansion flows through Día de los Muertos celebrations as well. It allows us to increase our idea of community to include everyone who has come before us. We recognize that their struggle is our struggle, that their strength is our strength, that we are continuing the work they did before us and that others did before them.
When we tap into that level of community, we are unstoppable.
A very close friend of mine died a few years ago. There are some days when I feel like I’m still in the middle of an endless chain of text messages with her. Most days I feel as close to her as I am to the people I see “in real life.” Something small will make me think of her, and I smile, knowing exactly what she would say and how she would say it. She is still with me, still laughing and dancing and cheering me on.
Do I miss her? Of course. Every day. Losing a loved one creates an incredibly specific pocket of emptiness that we carry around with us for the rest of our lives. The intention of Día de los Muertos isn’t to pretend that our relationship with the deceased is exactly as it was or would have been. We’re not trying to trick ourselves. But it opens the door to a new way of living with the dead instead of burying them and trying to forget them, as if they never existed.
The idea that we should “move on” or “get over it” when someone dies is much more of a trick, and a brutal one. Do not ask me to “move on” without my friend, or my grandmother, or anyone else I’ve lost. I will move forward knowing that they are still with me, just in a different way. Let the billionaires in Silicon Valley work on storing their consciousnesses on a server somewhere so their loved ones can connect to them “forever.” Those of us who understand how to live with our dead have been doing this for generations.
I said before that part of what Día de los Muertos means to me is honoring the past, but the other part is looking to the future. Tradition is a beautiful thing, and preserving it is especially important in the face of erasure or forced assimilation. As immigrants or children or grandchildren of immigrants, many of us navigate these issues every day. But culture cannot be frozen in time – not only is it impossible, it’s also not what the ancestors would want!
We honor our ancestors best by evolving – by continuing to grow, to adapt, and to learn.
Our ideas about who we are as individuals and as communities – how we define ourselves, how we let others define us – will continue to shift and expand with each generation, and that’s a good thing. Being in touch with those who came before us can help us distinguish what’s essential, as well as what needs to evolve.
I realize that not all of you reading this post have grown up with Día de los Muertos as part of your cultural or family traditions. Are you “allowed” to celebrate? ¡ Claro ! Paint your face, dress up, attend a party, and drink a special cocktail. But also…. take some time to create your own private ofrenda honoring those you’ve lost. Reflect on what they continue to mean to you even though they’re “gone” (p.s.: they’re not gone). Celebrate all the ways in which they still influence your life. Visit their grave or a place that was special to them. Leave space to listen for their guidance. Do this alone or with friends and family who knew them.
This year, as every year, I’ll be remembering my loved ones who’ve passed – and the ancestors I’ve never met. I’ll thank them for guiding me through the stresses and challenges of the last year. I’ll create an ofrenda to make them feel welcome in my home and in my life, and invite them to keep me company during my brief time on earth. Then I’ll meditate on the legacy of love, strength, and resilience I’m hoping to leave for future generations.
I’d love to hear who will you honor this November. Tell me their stories and how you connect with them, this day and every day.
Que todos descansen en paz,

]]>Cleansing your skin:
An extra boost of hydration is necessary during these colder months! Cleansing your skin is an essential first step when it comes to building a skin/body care routine! It removes dirt, oil, and makeup that can clog pores and cause breakouts. When choosing a cleanser it’s good to choose one that contains clean ingredients, especially for those with sensitive or dry skin that might react to harsh products. Our signature Cactus Soaps are handmade with skin-nourishing plant butters and oils that cleanse but do not dry out your skin. Since our soaps have no synthetic fragrance or dye they can be used on your whole body AND face!
We offer a variety of cactus soaps to fit everyone's preferences and skin concerns.
It’s essential to pick products that work for you! If you're having a little trouble deciding which one of our Cactus Soaps is best for you. We created this guide to help you pick which is best for your skin type!

Exfoliating regularly:
Exfoliating, in the simplest terms, is the process of removing dead skin cells. Exfoliating also improves circulation and overall skin tone by encouraging healthy blood flow to all areas of the body. It's important to use a gentle exfoliant at least once or twice a week.
Our Cactus Flower Exfoliants can be used twice a week, but are gentle enough to use daily. Since our exfoliants are soap-free this means your skin will be left silky smooth( no need to apply moisturizer afterward). We offer two scents options for the Cactus Flower Exfoliants, Hibiscus, and Mandarina. Remember both exfoliants work great and one isn’t better than the other. Each Cactus Flower Exfoliant has different properties and scents.
Cactus Flower Exfoliant-Hibiscus has a delicious blend of grapefruit and jasmine essential oils. The exfoliant's purple color is naturally occurring from the hibiscus flower.
Cactus Flower Exfoliant-Mandarina has a subtle scent of tangerine oil which helps to awaken the spirit.
Hydrating your skin during the fall:

]]>Did we all keep diaries when we were kids or was that just us? Keeping a diary as a kid is extremely beneficial in helping to learn how to vocalize and prioritize your emotions. We can still reap the benefits of keeping a diary in adulthood too! Journaling is a great way to get out your thoughts in a private space and can often be used as a form of self-therapy. In this busy world, we must all have a nonjudgemental space to let out our feelings to help us become better versions of ourselves.
We believe in the importance of self-care and a big part of taking care of yourself is writing out your thoughts and feelings to center yourself. Self-talk is extremely powerful to understanding your inner thoughts, life events, and manifesting things you are working towards. Journaling can be done at the beginning or end of each day to brain dump all the different thoughts we have going on or mentally work through something we are going through.
We’ve gathered up some journal prompts to help center yourself daily.
EVERYDAY JOURNAL PROMPTS:
When journaling it’s important to remember to compliment yourself and include positivity just as much as you include negative thoughts and situations. Be proud that you are showing up for yourself in this way and committing to becoming a more healed version of yourself, amig@!
Whenever you have some downtime, we recommend finding a journal, writing down some or all of these prompts, lighting a candle, bathing with your favorite Nopalera Cactus Soap, moisturizing with your Botanical Bar, and start writing out what’s in your head on paper!
]]>HISTORY OF SOAP:
Soap can be traced all the way back to Babylonian times (roughly 2800 B.C.). Babylonians were the first to master the art of soap making. They made soap from animal fats boiled with ashes and used it for cleaning wool, cotton, textiles, and was used medicinally for at least 5000 years.
Ancient Egyptians (around 1500 B.C.) mixed animal and vegetable oils with alkaline salts to produce a soap-like substance. Many other civilizations created and used soap in different ways and then when the Celts made their soap from animal fat and plant ashes and they named the product saipo, from which the word soap is derived!
Overall, traditional soap was typically made with an animal fat source combined with other natural materials. This same formula for soap is still used, with some modifications and can be altered in so many ways to serve different uses, benefits, and ingredient preferences.
Now we can create vegan soaps combined with plants (such as the nopal) to create a beautiful, hydrating, and cleansing household staple.
OUR BAR SOAPS:
Our soaps are uniquely shaped to resemble the “penca” or pad of the nopal. The nopal is a main ingredient in our products due to its many skin benefits. We use the “penca” or cactus pad in our soaps as it provides a gentle exfoliation as well as assists with soothing and cleansing the skin. Our signature cactus soaps are handmade with plant butters and oils that cleanse and leave your skin moisturized.
Planta Futura: Inhale the subtle scent of lemongrass oil to calm the mind and plan for tomorrow. The Planta Futura Soap is the only soap that contains mica to achieve the color. We source our mica from sustainable suppliers.
Flor De Mayo: The subtle scent of jasmine oil with rose clay creates a rich experience. The Flor De Mayo soap contains real Jasmine oil that is very delicate. This is not a perfume soap. No scent will be left on your skin after using. The Flor De Mayo Soap contains pink clay which adds a creamy texture to the lather.
Noche Clara: The subtle scent of eucalyptus and sage oil brings clarity of mind. Activated charcoal provides the gentlest exfoliation. The Noche Clara Soap contains activated charcoal. This provides a gentle exfoliation and is great for oily or acne prone skin.
Desnuda: Our signature cactus soap is completely unscented. The Desnuda Soap is the natural color of its ingredients.
BAR SOAP USES:
Throughout the centuries of using bar soap, there have been some really great discoveries of uses beyond washing your hands.
Bar soap is also a great sustainable addition to your self-care routine. Once you use it up, there is no waste eliminating the use of single-use plastic bottles! Not all bar soap is made equal, amig@! Our soaps are made with all-natural ingredients to care for your skin.
]]>📍Santiago De Los Caballeros
Santiago de Los Caballeros also known as Santiago is a city located in the north of the Dominican Republic. It’s the second largest city and it's home to beautiful colonial architecture, museums, and churches that are worth a visit.
Here are some of my favorite spots to visit in this area!
Acasa is my go-to for a vegan sweet treat! I love grabbing a Carrot Cake Muffin y un cafecito! The cafe offers a nice selection of vegan cookies, cupcakes, and donuts. For drinks, there’s a wide selection of smoothies, juices, coffee, and matcha. I recommend the Crunchy Peanut Butter smoothie and you can also create your own smoothies!
It’s also a great lunch spot for vegetarians and vegans. The menu offers Vegan Nachos, Stuffed Cheesy Mushrooms, Veggie Quesadilla, and much more.
The Deck offers a relaxing atmosphere with its gorgeous outdoor seating area and extensive menu. Here you can find traditional Dominican dishes that have a more modern twist. Such as Shrimp Mofonguitos and Croquetas de Maduro. Amig@ you have to trust me on this one…The Deck has the BEST salads in Santiago! The Strawberry Goat Cheese Salad is a must-have!! It’s the perfect combination of sweet and savory with fried goat cheese balls, caramelized pecans, and strawberries.
Monumento a Los Héroes de la Restauración
(Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration)
El Monumento is the site to see! It’s the highest building in Santiago and it’s located at the top of a hill. It’s circled on all sides by a gorgeous multi-level garden that offers panoramic views over the entire city. You can also take a tour inside where you will find displays of the DR’s major historical battles, as well as paintings of Spanish artist Vela Zanetti. Once you reach the top you can walk out to a wraparound balcony that overlooks the city. I’m always left amazed no matter how many times I visit. This is the perfect activity for history buffs but if you’re afraid of heights you might want to steer away!
The heat in the Dominican Republic is no joke. 🔥 Which is why I love having a refreshing drink to cool off and KGB Bistro is just the place for that! While KGB Bistro has an extensive food menu I love their juices and smoothie options. Here you can find classic flavors such as banana and strawberry smoothies. As well as classic Dominican flavors such as jugos de chinola y cereza (passion fruit and cherry juice). These are very popular juices here in the Dominican Republic. Since childhood, I remember drinking these jugos made fresh by my abuelita.
📍Cabarete
The town is a popular tourist destination, and there are plenty of restaurants and local shops. If you're into surfing or kiteboarding, this is definitely the place for you. Cabarete is known as one of the best spots in the country for these activities. If you're looking for the perfect beach town look no further! Cabarete has something to offer para todos!
The local coffee shop is the perfect place to get some work done or hang out with friends to eat some delicious waffles. They serve quality locally grown coffee, toast, smoothie bowls, and protein bowls. The “Bora Bora” smoothie bowl with blackberry, strawberry, banana, beets, and flax seeds is my #1 recommendation. Vagamundo Coffee & Waffles also specializes in authentic Liége waffles made with Belgium Pearl Sugar. You can select a wide range of toppings. For those like me who enjoy mixing sweet and savory, I recommend “Istanbul '' which is topped with ricotta, honey, and toasted almonds. Also, the “Graceland” waffle is topped with peanut butter, banana, and bacon!
Vagamundo Coffee & Waffles is also an extension of a non-profit organization called Niños de la Luz, which works to home street kids in the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and South Sudan. So many of the staff here are young adults who have graduated from the home! This provides them with job experience and builds their future. Isn’t this place so amazing?
BEACHES
📍Playa Encuentro
This is the perfect beach for surfing even if you're a beginner! There are some amazing surfing lessons for all levels. A great option is Pauhana Surf School. It’s great for beginners who want to ease into this experience. They offer group classes so it’s perfect if you're going along with a big group of friends.
📍Kite Beach
Cabarete is the place to be if you're a water sports fanatic! Kitesurfing is another popular activity you can try in Cabarete. Kite Beach is the place to go to take kitesurfing lessons even as a complete beginner. Or you can relax on the beach and watch the local kite surfers! You can check out Optimal Kitesurfing School for lessons!
📍Sosua Beach
Sosúa Beach is located ~ 20 minutes away from Cabarete. It’s well worth the drive! This is the perfect beach for those who just want to sit back and relax. This beach offers lots of lounge chairs and umbrellas. Sosúa Beach is also a lively area with local shops, bars ,and restaurants. So you can still enjoy the gorgeous view of the sand and crystal blue water as you enjoy a nice cocktail.
July 25th is my birthday, and to celebrate I wanted to share the most important things I've learned in 46 years of life...
46 Things I've Learned in 46 Years
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS?
It’s finally that time of year when we all flock to the beach and go on vacation to sunny destinations. It’s important to be prepared for the intense UV rays that come along with these trips. Using sunscreen keeps UV rays from reaching the skin. It also blocks some of the visible light that causes redness, swelling, and pain. Even those who are extremely vigilant about avoiding sun damage can make the mistake of not putting enough sunscreen on when in new environments. It happens to the best of us! In these cases where we forget to take proper care of our skin is when we might develop a sunburn. Here are some signs that it may be time to head inside and out of the sun:
It's important to treat the burn as soon as possible, because the longer you wait, the more damage can be done to your skin. If you experience any of these symptoms, it's time to take action!
HYDRATION IS KEY!
In order to treat sunburned skin, you need to hydrate it. To do this, you need to use a moisturizer on your skin and drink PLENTY of water. Sunburns can often cause you to feel dehydrated. By drinking water, you can start to feel more hydrated.
If you’re looking for the perfect moisturizer to use after sun exposure we’ve got you covered! Our Moisturizing Botanical Bars are uniquely formulated with plant butters, oils, and Mexican botanicals to bring deep hydration to the skin. Replacing the need for large bottles of lotion, our small but mighty bar comes in a gorgeous reusable/recyclable tin for safe storage. Hydrated skin and Eco-friendly products for the win!! Good for: Very dry skin. Whole Body. The Original Moisturizing Botanical Bar has a subtle scent of tangerine oil. It contains Tepezcohuite also known as “skin tree” in Mexico for its ability to regenerate skin cells. The Flor De Mayo Moisturizing Botanical Bar has a luxurious Jasmine scent and contains pink clay which reduces irritation and inflammation. The Jasmine Oil has Antibacterial properties and a natural cicatrisant which helps reduce scars. Truly the perfect duo! Both bars contain Nopal Oil (prickly pear oil) which deeply hydrates and is rich in Vitamin E (antioxidant), K, and omega fatty acids that keep your skin healthy. The amazing benefits don’t end here! Nopal Oil is rich in amino acids that promote skin cell turnover.
Remember to keep the Botanical Bars in a cool, dry place. Do not leave in the sun (we suggest leaving at home and OUT of your beach bag).
Instead of using harsh chemicals for your skin use all-natural products. All of our products are cruelty-free, palm oil free, vegan, and have no synthetic fragrances (We only use pure essential oils). Remember hydration is key to helping your skin heal faster.
USE COLD WATER
Showering with cold water is a great way to treat sunburned skin. Avoid using extremely hot water because it can cause more pain and irritation. Cold water can help reduce inflammation and pain and provides relief from the discomfort that comes with the sunburn.
When taking a shower it’s essential to use a soap that offers deep hydration. Our signature Cactus Soaps are handmade with skin-nourishing plant butters and oils. The “penca” or cactus pad in our soaps assists with soothing and cleansing the skin. Which is exactly what your skin needs!
Noche Clara Cactus Soap: Good for oily / acne-prone skin. Charcoal provides the gentlest exfoliation. The subtle scent of sage and eucalyptus oil invigorates the senses while providing a calming effect.
Planta Futura Cactus Soap: Good for all skin types. The subtle scent of lemongrass oil to bring clarity of mind. Lemongrass Oil has Anti-inflammatory properties that reduce redness and inflammation.
Flor De Mayo Cactus Soap: Good for sensitive and dry skin. Pink clay creates a creamy lather. Allow the subtle scent of Jasmine oil to anoint your body. Jasmine Oil has Antibacterial properties and natural cicatrisant (scar reducer).
Desnuda Cactus Soap: Good For Extra Sensitive Skin. All Skin Types, Whole Body, & Face. Completely unscented. It is perfect for those who have extra sensitive skin and noses. It contains nopal, a humectant that draws moisture to the skin.
Keep soap well drained between uses for long life.
Natural soap bars are best because they're free of harsh chemicals usually found in conventional bar soaps. All of our soaps are very delicate as they aren’t perfume soaps. This means no scent will be left on your skin after using.
BE GENTLE
When you are burnt, you must be very gentle with your skin and pay close attention to it so it doesn't get infected and heal properly. Sunburns can cause your skin to peel so remember to not scratch or pick the skin. Be extra careful!
Once your skin is in the peeling stage and the redness and irritation is gone you can focus on gently removing the dead skin. We recommend using a gentle exfoliant to scrub away dead skin while also treating the burned skin.
Our Cactus Flower Exfoliants are the perfect three-in-one oil cleansers, exfoliants, and moisturizers that leave your skin silky smooth and glowing. You will not need to apply a moisturizer afterwards. Cactus helps to cleanse and draw moisture to the skin.
Hibiscus: Hibiscus flower is rich in antioxidants, Vitamin C, and AHA's that promote healthy glowing skin. Naturally scented with a blend of jasmine and grapefruit oils.
Mandarina: Nopal cleanses and hydrates the skin while safflower oil infused with achiote seeds soothes. The subtle scent of tangerine oil helps to awaken the spirit.
Lastly, remember to always wear sunscreen when going outside during times when UV rays are strongest especially during these summer months! Not only are these tips used for treating sunburnt skin but can be used all year round. Our gorgeous Nopal based products help soothe, cleanse, and hydrate the skin. They’re the perfect addition to your self-care routine. Keep your skin protected all year round, amig@!
]]>Here are five tips—backed by our abuelas—to help your skin look (and feel) great all summer long:
Drink Water:
The easiest way to achieve healthy skin is simply by drinking more water. It's that simple. The skin is the body's largest organ, and approximately 60% of the human body is made up of water, so it makes sense that hydration would have a major impact on your appearance.
Exfoliate:
When you exfoliate, you're removing dead skin cells and helping your skin to regenerate itself. Exfoliating doesn't have to be a painful process: with the right products and technique, you can use exfoliation as an effective way to brighten your complexion and even out texture without causing irritation or redness.
Exfoliation is different from scrubbing or buffing because it's not meant to remove layers of skin—instead, it works on the surface level of your epidermis (the uppermost layer) by sloughing off dead cells that tend to build up over time. This allows for better absorption of other products used after exfoliating because those ingredients are able to get down into the deeper layers of skin more easily than if there were still more dead cells clogging pores.
Our Cactus Flower Exfoliants are the perfect gentle exfoliants for regular use. A three-in-one oil cleanser, exfoliant, and moisturizer that leaves your skin feeling silky soft. You will not need to apply a moisturizer afterwards.
Nopal cleanses and hydrates the skin while safflower oil infused with achiote seeds soothes. The subtle scent of tangerine oil helps to awaken the spirit.
Typical usage: Twice a week.
Good for: Face and body.
Wear SPF:
As you're probably aware, sunscreen is a must during the summer months. The sun's UV rays penetrate deep into the skin, causing damage that can lead to wrinkles and premature aging. Fortunately, it's easy to find all-natural products that provide protection against those harmful rays—all you need to do is look for something labeled "broad spectrum" or "water-resistant."
Look for products that are non-greasy and fragrance-free; this will help keep your skin clear of breakouts while still allowing your pores some breathing room.
Our signature Cactus Soaps are great for layering under unscented lotions to enjoy the subtle fragrance of Mexican-inspired scents. Handmade with skin-nourishing plant butters and oils that cleanse but do not dry out your skin.
Great for: All skin types. Whole body & face.
Noche Clara (black soap): Good for oily / acne-prone skin. Charcoal provides gentlest exfoliation. The subtle scent of sage and eucalyptus oil.
Planta Futura (green soap): Good for all skin types. The subtle scent of lemongrass oil to bring clarity of mind.
Flor De Mayo (pink soap): Good for sensitive and dry skin. Pink clay creates a creamy lather. Allow the subtle scent of Jasmine oil to anoint your body.
High-Quality Products:
One of the most important steps to getting glowing summer skin is using high quality products. We recommend all-natural nopal-based body care products inspired by the beauty and richness of Mexico to bring out the beauty and richness of YOU. Sound good?
When it comes to natural beauty, the keyword is “natural.” You should always look for products made with ingredients that are from the earth such as:
Our products are vegan, cruelty-free, palm oil free, contain no synthetic fragrance or dyes, and use ingredients that are included to benefit your skin.
Moisturize Before And After Sun Exposure:
Moisturizing before sun exposure is just as important as the treatment afterward! Moisturizing daily is recommended so that your skin will always be hydrated and better able to retain water. If you have time for more thorough skincare treatment, do it after your morning shower or bath when your pores are open and the heat from the steam helps soften the tissues in your skin.
You should also moisturize after sun exposure.
After being in the sun, apply another layer of moisturizer to hydrate and cool down any areas that might be overheated or irritated by UV radiation. Always choose all-natural products without harmful chemicals or synthetics.
Our vegan solid Moisturizing Botanical Bars are uniquely formulated with plant butters, oils, and Mexican botanicals to bring deep hydration to the skin. Replacing the need for plastic bottles of lotion, our bars come in gorgeous reusable/recyclable tins for safe storage.
Both bars feature Nopal Oil (prickly pear oil), which is high in Vitamin E, K, and omega fatty acids, that keep your skin healthy.
Good for: Very dry skin. Whole Body.
By taking a few minutes out of your day to treat yourself with these all-natural products, your skin will thank you. It's important to note that these tips are not just for the summer but can be used year-round as well. Nopal products are great for your summer skincare routine, but they’re also a great addition to any beauty arsenal. They have vitamins and minerals that promote skin health and anti-aging properties that can make your skin look and feel younger. Plus, they’re packed with antioxidants and amino acids to help keep your skin moisturized all day long–something we could all use during these hot summer months!

LinkedIn profiles of other successful beauty founders shows many were former executives at big beauty companies like
Estée Lauder and
L'Oréal. Do you have to be an insider to succeed? I am living proof that the answer is no.
I was at a turning point in my life. I knew that creating financial stability for me and my child was not going to come from getting yet another job that didn't pay enough.
I felt a responsibility to create this brand, which I knew would be centered around the Nopal -- the most Mexican plant ever. I was going to find a way to build this no matter what. It was do or die.
I started side hustles. I got other jobs. I enrolled in formulation school (using my American Express card). I learned how to make products and I started to write out the vision for the brand you know today as Nopalera. I spent over a year building this brand in the quiet. Nights, weekends, no applause, and no guarantee of success. Because that is what it takes.
Being bold, transparent, and authentic about this journey is what has attracted the community we have today. I share #realtalk and resources to other founders via my entrepreneurial newsletter from my personal website. I always wanted a mentor and never found one. So instead I became one.
A rising tide lifts all boats.
To have a full story feature in The New York Times, Sunday Routine is a great milestone for me, Nopalera, and our community. We are showing the world what is possible. This is for us.

Dear Beloved Nopalera Customers,
Like all small businesses, we have been impacted by global supply chain issues and rising costs across the board. As you know, it is our mission is to provide high-quality products that celebrate and elevate our culture. Your support = everything. This past year, we've witnessed the cost of shipping skyrocket by 500%, and many of our ingredient prices have doubled. We realized that we have been undercharging on shipping, which has caused us to lose a lot of money in 2022. In order for us to keep going, we have no choice but to increase our shipping charges on our website to match what they actually cost us. Our product prices will remain the same for now. Good news, phew! We live in an Amazon world where people expect free shipping. But the reality is that shipping is labor + time + materials = money. Effective immediately, we have increased our free shipping threshold to $100 and new shipping price tiers depending on weight and distance for the order. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and hope you will continue with us on this journey.
xx

]]>These daily rituals can include making your morning cup of coffee, going on a walk, doing your skincare routine and so much more. For us, it’s stepping into the shower and taking this time *uninterrupted* to relax and unwind. We like to upgrade our routines with a luxurious exfoliating scrub.
It’s amazing to think how a simple step such as exfoliating dates back thousands of years to ancient civilizations.
Ancient Egyptians were the first to practice exfoliation. They used various methods such as the dry body brushing technique and used pumice stones. Also, using sour milk to renew the texture of the skin. While Native Americans exfoliated using dried corn cobs and Ancient Greeks and Romans exfoliated using a curved blade called a “strigil”.
Now we have access to so many exfoliating scrubs. At Nopalera we offer the Cactus Flower Exfoliant in two scents, Mandarina and Hibiscus. Our vegan exfoliators act as a 3-in-1 oil cleanser, exfoliant, and moisturizer. Additionally, our scrubs are soap-free which means your skin will feel silky soft (no need to apply moisturizer afterward). While Nopal Oil cleanses and hydrates the skin.
The typical usage is twice a week since these are natural exfoliators it's gentle enough for daily use. The joy of exfoliation doesn’t end in the shower! Our scrubs can be used on your face AND as a lip scrub. Men can also use the exfoliants under their beards and doubles as a moisturizer to prevent dry flaky skin.
Happy Exfoliating Amig@’s !!
]]>The nopal cactus is an ancient symbol of Mexican culture and is one of the most sustainable, nourishing, and resilient crops in the world. You can eat it, make textiles from it, and use it to hydrate your skin and hair.
Also known as, prickly pear cactus in English, the nopal cactus can thrive in extremely hot and dry climates and therefor can be a valuable food source in areas facing food scarcity. It also has the ability to thrive in poor soil conditions.
Nopales are not only a nourishing food sources for humans, but have the ability to sustain livestock with minimal water needed to keep the plant thriving. Nopales are able to store large amounts of water in their "paddles" to sustain themselves through heavy drought periods.
We’ve taken our inspiration–and our name–from this incredible plant. It’s strong, sustainable, resilient, and beautiful. Just like us.
