The nopal cactus is an ancient symbol of Mexican culture and is one of the most sustainable, nourishing, and resilient crops in the world. You can eat it, make textiles from it, and use it to hydrate your skin and hair.
Also known as, prickly pear cactus in English, the nopal cactus can thrive in extremely hot and dry climates and therefor can be a valuable food source in areas facing food scarcity. It also has the ability to thrive in poor soil conditions.
Nopales are not only a nourishing food sources for humans, but have the ability to sustain livestock with minimal water needed to keep the plant thriving. Nopales are able to store large amounts of water in their "paddles" to sustain themselves through heavy drought periods.
We’ve taken our inspiration–and our name–from this incredible plant. It’s strong, sustainable, resilient, and beautiful. Just like us.
